Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. Imagine building an AI app for a problem you have not understood. It would solve the wrong thing. Today we learn problem scoping with the four Ws canvas, five W one H questions, a clear problem statement, and stakeholders and goals.

First, what is problem scoping? It is the first stage of the AI project cycle. Scoping means fixing the boundary of the problem, so we understand it fully before collecting any data. The stage ends when we can write one clear problem statement.

A canvas is a sheet with blocks that we fill in, and the four Ws canvas has four blocks. The Who block asks, who is affected by this problem? The What block asks, what exactly is the problem, and what is the proof? The Where block asks, in which place and situation does it happen? The Why block asks, why is solving it valuable, and who benefits?

Let us fill the canvas live for a real problem, long queues at the school canteen. In the Who block, we first list the stakeholders, the people affected, and here they are students and teachers. What do we know about them? Students waste most of their lunch break standing in a queue. The canteen staff are also affected, because they are rushed and make billing mistakes.

Now the What block. The problem is that the lunch queue takes about fifteen minutes of a twenty five minute break. Our evidence comes from timing the queue for one week and asking students in a short survey. It matters because some students skip lunch or eat in a hurry.

Next, the Where and Why blocks. Where does it happen? At the single billing counter of the canteen. When is it worst? In the first ten minutes of the lunch break. Why solve it? So students get their full break to eat and relax. The benefit is healthier, less stressed students and calmer canteen staff.

Another tool is five W one H questioning, six questions that dig into any problem. Who asks about the people involved. What asks about the problem and its facts. When asks about the time it happens. Where asks about the place. Why asks about the reason and its value. How asks about the way the problem happens, and how it could be solved.

Let us ask all six about the canteen. Who? About eight hundred students share one canteen. What? Billing is slow. When? At lunch, especially the first ten minutes. Where? At one single counter. Why? Most students pay in cash and wait for change. How could we help? Perhaps an app that predicts rush time and lets students pre-order.

Pause and predict. The four Ws canvas has Who, What, Where and Why. Five W one H adds two more questions. Which two are they? They are When and How, so five W one H asks about time and method too.

Now we join the canvas into one problem statement template. It starts with our, followed by the stakeholders from the Who block. Next comes has or have a problem that, followed by the issue from the What block. Then when or while, followed by the situation from the Where block. It ends with an ideal solution would, followed by the benefit from the Why block.

Here is our finished problem statement, read one part at a time. The Who is our students, the people who have the problem. The What is that billing takes fifteen of their twenty five lunch minutes. The Where is the queue at the single canteen counter. The Why is that an ideal solution would give them their full lunch time.

Finally, identify every stakeholder and what each one wants, which is their goal. Students want to eat their lunch in peace. The canteen staff want less rush and fewer billing mistakes. Parents want their children to eat properly. The school wants lunch breaks to run smoothly. A good AI solution should meet these goals without harming any stakeholder.

Let us recap. Problem scoping is the first stage, and it ends with a clear problem statement. The four Ws canvas asks Who, What, Where and Why. Five W one H adds When and How. And always name every stakeholder and their goal.
