Qualities and functions of an entrepreneur

Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. Two friends open the same kind of shop on the same street. One grows, and the other shuts down in a year. What made the difference? Today we will learn the qualities that make a successful entrepreneur, and the functions, or main jobs, an entrepreneur performs.

Let us first separate two ideas. Qualities describe what an entrepreneur is like, such as patient or confident. Functions describe the work an entrepreneur actually does, such as making decisions. The good news is that qualities are not only inborn, and you can learn and practise them.

Here are the first four qualities. Patience means waiting calmly for results, because most businesses earn very little in the first months. A positive attitude means seeing the good side, even learning something from a loss. Hard work means putting in steady effort, like keeping a shop open for long hours. Confidence means believing in yourself, so you can explain your idea to a bank for a loan.

Here are five more qualities. Creativity means thinking of new ideas, like a new menu for a tiffin service. Decision making means choosing well and on time, such as ordering more stock before Diwali. Risk taking means trying something even when success is not sure, like investing your savings. Persistence means never giving up after a failure, and trying again. Being open-minded means listening to feedback and changing, for example fixing a problem a customer complains about.

Many people think risk taking means gambling, but that is wrong. A good entrepreneur takes calculated risks, after studying the market and customers. They start small and test whether people will buy. They also keep a backup plan in case things do not work.

Now let us move to functions. Making decisions means choosing what to sell, where, and at what price. Managing the business means planning the work, hiring people and keeping everything under control. Dividing income means paying rent, wages and suppliers, then deciding how to use the profit. Taking risks means bearing the loss if the business does not do well. Innovation means creating new products or new and better ways of working.

Let us look at each function with an example. Meera wants to start a juice stall, so first she decides what to sell, fresh juice or packed drinks. She decides where to set up, and who her customers are, maybe college students. Then she decides the price, so that students can afford it and she still earns a profit.

Next, Meera manages the business. She plans the daily work and buys fruit every morning. She hires a helper and guides him. When money comes in, she first pays the rent, her helper's wages and the fruit seller. Whatever is left is profit, and she saves part of it to buy a second juicer.

Meera also takes risks every day. The fruit may spoil, or sales may drop in the rainy season, and she bears that loss. To stay ahead, she innovates, with new seasonal flavours, UPI payments and delivery to nearby hostels. Innovation keeps her customers coming back instead of going to a new stall.

Pause and think about this case. Riya runs a home bakery and tries a new millet cake. She asks customers for feedback and improves the recipe. Which quality and which function does she show? She shows creativity and open-mindedness, and she performs the function of innovation.

Let us revise what we learned today. Qualities describe what an entrepreneur is like, and they can be learned. Important qualities are patience, confidence, creativity and persistence, along with hard work and a positive attitude. Good entrepreneurs take calculated risks, not gambles. Their functions are making decisions, managing the business and dividing income. They also take risks and keep innovating.
