Green skills are the knowledge and habits that protect the environment, and green jobs use them at work. This lesson covers resources, pollution, the greenhouse effect, conservation and waste segregation.

Follows the syllabus of: CBSE Class 9 Information Technology (402), CBSE Class 9 Artificial Intelligence (417)

Society and environment

Environment: all living and non-living things around us
Society depends on it for air, water, food
Human actions can harm or protect it

Natural resources

TypeMeaningExample
Renewablerefills naturallysunlight, wind
Non-renewablelimited, runs outcoal, petrol

Problems we face

Deforestation: cutting forests
Air pollution: vehicle and factory smoke
Water pollution: waste in rivers
Global warming: Earth getting hotter

The greenhouse effect

Some gases trap the Sun's heat
Example: carbon dioxide, methane
Natural effect keeps Earth warm
Extra gases cause global warming

Conserving resources

ResourceHow to save
Waterfix leaks, reuse
Energyswitch off, LEDs
Soilplant trees
Forestuse less paper

The 3 Rs

Reduce: use less
Reuse: use again
Recycle: make something new from waste

Quick answers

Give one renewable and one non-renewable resource.

Sunlight is renewable; coal is non-renewable.

Which bin takes fruit peels?

The green bin, for wet waste.

Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. Why are summers getting hotter and rivers getting dirtier? And can a job actually help the planet? Today we will learn how society and the environment are linked, natural resources, pollution, conservation, the green economy, and green skills.

Let us start with the link between people and nature. The environment means all the living and non living things around us, like plants, animals, air, water and soil. Society depends on the environment for clean air, water, food and materials. And our actions, like cutting trees or planting them, can harm or protect it.

A natural resource is anything from nature that we use. Renewable resources refill naturally, so they do not run out, like sunlight and wind. Non renewable resources are limited and take millions of years to form, like coal and petrol. Water and forests are renewable, but only if we do not overuse them.

Overuse of resources creates serious problems. Deforestation means cutting down forests, which removes homes for animals. Air pollution comes from vehicle and factory smoke. Water pollution happens when waste and plastic are thrown into rivers. Global warming means the Earth is getting hotter, mainly because of gases released by burning fuels.

Let us understand global warming. Some gases in the air trap the Sun's heat, like the glass of a greenhouse. These are called greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane. A natural amount is useful, because it keeps the Earth warm enough for life. But burning coal and petrol adds extra gases, and the extra heat causes global warming.

Conservation means using resources carefully so they last longer. Save water by fixing leaking taps and reusing water for plants. Save energy by switching off fans and lights, and by using L E D bulbs. Protect soil by planting trees, whose roots hold the soil. Protect forests by using less paper and writing on both sides.

A simple rule for daily life is the three Rs. Reduce means using less, like carrying a cloth bag instead of taking plastic bags. Reuse means using a thing again, like a glass jar for storing pens. Recycle means turning waste into something new, like old newspapers into fresh paper.

Waste must be separated at home, and this is called segregation. The green bin is for wet waste, like vegetable and fruit peels, which can become compost. The blue bin is for dry waste, like paper and plastic, which can be recycled. Hazardous waste, like batteries, needs separate safe disposal. Bin colours can differ between cities, so follow your local rules.

Now, the green economy. A green economy means a country grows and earns money without harming nature. It produces low pollution and less carbon dioxide. It uses resources efficiently, which means without waste. For example, India is building large solar parks and wind farms to produce clean electricity.

Green skills are the knowledge and abilities needed to protect the environment at work. A solar panel technician installs and repairs solar panels on rooftops. A waste management worker collects, sorts and recycles waste. Organic farmers grow food without harmful chemicals, and water experts save and clean water. These green jobs are growing fast in India.

Everyone has a role in a green future, and these people are called stakeholders. The government makes rules, like banning some single use plastic items. Industries can use cleaner technology to reduce smoke. Citizens can save energy and water every day. And students can spread awareness at home and in school. Pause and predict. You leave the classroom last. What is your green action? Switch off the fans and lights.

Let us revise what we learned today. Society depends on the environment for everything. Natural resources are renewable or non renewable. We must conserve water, energy, soil and forests. Follow the three Rs and segregate waste at home. And a green economy with green jobs grows without harming nature. Start one green habit at home this week.
