Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. Why does a new computer feel fast, but a year later it becomes slow and full of problems? Usually, it is poor care. Today we will learn how to keep a computer clean, fast and safe.
Computer care and maintenance means the regular steps we take to keep a computer working well. Good care makes the computer last longer. It keeps the computer fast, with fewer errors. And most importantly, it keeps your data safe.
Let us start with simple daily habits. Keep food and drinks away, since a spill can damage the keyboard. Keep the computer in a cool, dust-free place with space for air to flow. Handle cables, pen drives and ports gently. And always shut down properly from the Start menu, instead of switching off the power.
Cleaning is part of care, but always switch off and unplug first. Clean the keyboard with a soft brush or a blower, not water. Wipe the screen with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoid strong glass cleaners. Clean the mouse with a slightly damp cloth. Clear dust from the vents with an air blower, and leave opening the cabinet to a technician.
Power problems are common in India, so protect your computer. A UPS is an uninterruptible power supply. It keeps the computer on for a few minutes in a power cut, so you can save and shut down. A surge protector, or spike guard, protects against sudden high voltage. And do not plug too many devices into one socket.
Malware means harmful software made to damage a computer or steal data. A virus attaches to files and spreads, damaging them. A worm copies itself across a network on its own. A Trojan hides inside an app that looks useful. Spyware secretly watches you and steals data, like passwords. Ransomware locks your files and demands money to unlock them.
Here is how to keep malware away. Keep antivirus software turned on and updated, and on Windows the built-in Microsoft Defender already does this. Install operating system and app updates, because they fix security holes. Download apps only from trusted sources. Scan pen drives before opening them. And never click unknown links in messages or emails.
A cluttered computer becomes slow, so clean it inside too. Delete unwanted files, and empty the Recycle Bin. Uninstall apps you no longer use. Use the Disk Cleanup tool in Windows to remove temporary files. And do not fill your storage drive completely, because the computer needs free space to work.
Even a well cared computer can fail, so always keep a backup. A backup is an extra copy of your important files, kept in a different place. You can store it on a pen drive, an external hard disk, or cloud storage like Google Drive or OneDrive. Back up regularly, for example every week, so you never lose much work.
Learn to notice warning signs. If the computer is very slow, the disk may be full, or too many apps are running. Strange pop-ups may mean malware. A loud fan and heat often mean dust is blocking the vents. And sudden shutdowns can come from power or heating problems.
Pause and think. A friend gives you a pen drive with a free game on it. What should you do first? Scan the pen drive with antivirus before opening anything, because free games are a common way to spread malware.
Let us revise what we learned today. Keep food, dust and heat away from the computer. Clean the parts only after switching off and unplugging. Use a UPS and a surge protector against power problems. Keep antivirus on and install updates. And back up your important files regularly.
