Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. Think of the old phones, chargers and earphones lying in your drawer at home. Where do they go when you throw them away? Today we will learn what e-waste is, why it is dangerous, and how to manage and dispose of it responsibly in India.

Let us start with the meaning. E-waste is short for electronic waste. It means any electrical or electronic item that is old, broken or no longer wanted. Common examples are mobile phones, laptops, chargers, batteries, televisions and even washing machines. E-waste is one of the fastest growing kinds of waste in the world, because we replace gadgets so often.

Why is there so much of it? Many people upgrade their phones every two or three years, even when the old one works. Sometimes a repair costs almost as much as a new device, so people simply buy new. Companies also launch new models very quickly. As a result, India is now among the top three e-waste producing countries in the world, along with China and the United States.

A gadget is a mix of treasure and poison. Circuit boards contain small amounts of gold, silver and copper, which are valuable. Batteries contain lithium and cobalt, which are also valuable. Lead is found in old television screens and in solder, and it is toxic, which means poisonous. Mercury is found in old tube lights and some old screens. Cadmium is found in some older rechargeable batteries.

When e-waste is handled badly, these materials harm people. Lead damages the brain and nerves, and children are hurt the most. Mercury damages the brain and the kidneys. Cadmium harms the kidneys and makes bones weak. And burning wires to get copper releases toxic smoke that damages the lungs.

E-waste also harms the environment. When it is dumped in landfills, toxic metals slowly leak into the soil. Rain carries these chemicals into groundwater and rivers, which people drink from. Open burning pollutes the air for everyone nearby. And lithium batteries thrown in normal garbage can catch fire in garbage trucks and dumps.

In India, a large share of e-waste is handled by the informal sector. This means small unregistered scrap dealers, often in crowded city areas. Workers break gadgets with bare hands and no safety gear. They use acid baths and open fires to pull out metals. Sadly, children often work in these units, breathing toxic fumes every day.

The best way to manage e-waste is the three R rule, in this order. Reduce means buying fewer gadgets and using them longer, like skipping a phone upgrade you do not need. Reuse means giving a device a second life, by repairing it, passing it to a sibling, or donating it. Recycle means sending it to a proper recycler, who safely recovers metals and plastics.

Here are simple ways to reduce and reuse at home. Use a phone cover and screen guard, so the device lasts longer. When a battery gets weak, replace only the battery, not the whole phone. Donate a working laptop to a school or an NGO. Or sell your old phone to a certified refurbisher, who repairs and resells it. Pause and predict: your phone battery lasts only half a day, which R should you choose first? Reuse, by replacing just the battery.

Now let us see what a registered recycler does. First, e-waste is collected from homes, shops and offices. Batteries are removed carefully, because they can catch fire. Machines break the devices into small parts. The parts are separated into metals, plastics and glass. Metals are recovered with safe, controlled methods. Finally, these materials are used again to make new products.

India has a clear law for e-waste. It is called the E-Waste Management Rules, two thousand twenty two. These rules came into force on the first of April, two thousand twenty three. They follow a principle called Extended Producer Responsibility, or EPR. It means the maker of a product stays responsible for it, even after you throw it away. Producers must register and make sure a fixed share of their products is collected and recycled by registered recyclers.

So what should you do with your old gadget? Never throw e-waste in the normal dustbin, and never burn it. Check the brand's website for a take-back programme, as many brands collect old devices. You can also drop it at an authorised collection centre, which many cities run. Always give it only to a registered recycler, not a random scrap dealer. Before handing over a phone or laptop, back up your data and do a factory reset.
