Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. Your phone, the railway ticket machine and the washing machine at home have something in common. Each one has a computer inside. Today we will learn what a computer is, what makes it special, where we use it, and its main types.
Let us start with a simple meaning. A computer is an electronic machine that works on data. Data means raw facts, like marks, names or prices. It takes data in, follows a set of instructions called a program, and gives a result. It can also store the data and the results to use later.
Every computer follows the same four step idea. First comes input, where data goes in, like the marks of five subjects. Next comes processing, where the computer adds the marks and finds the percentage. Then comes output, where the result is shown on the screen or printed. Finally, storage keeps the report card saved for later.
Two words are often confused, so let us separate them. Data is raw facts that mean little on their own, like seventy eight, eighty five and ninety. Processing is the work done on the data, like adding and averaging. Information is the useful result, like an average of eighty four point three.
Why do we use computers everywhere? Because of four main characteristics. Speed means a computer can do millions of steps in a single second. Accuracy means the result is correct, as long as the data and instructions are correct. Storage means it can keep a huge amount of data, like every student record of a school. Diligence means it never gets tired or bored, even after doing the same work all day.
Some books add a few more points. Versatility means one computer can type a letter, play a song and book a train ticket. Reliability means it behaves the same way every time. A computer cannot think by itself, and it only follows instructions. It also has no feelings, so it cannot decide what is right or wrong.
Pause and predict. A teacher types sixty instead of ninety for one student. Will the computer catch the mistake? No, it will not. Computers are accurate, but they trust the data we give. Wrong input gives wrong output. This rule is called garbage in, garbage out, or gigo for short.
Now let us see where computers are used. At home, we pay electricity bills and send money using UPI apps. At home, we also learn and relax with online videos and music. In school, teachers use smart boards to teach. The school office keeps attendance and result records on computers.
Computers are just as important at work. Banks keep every account on computers and run ATMs and net banking. Railways use computers to book tickets online. Hospitals use computers inside scanning machines like x-ray, M R eye and C T scan machines. Hospitals also store patient history, so any doctor can see old reports.
Computers are grouped into types by size, speed and power. A microcomputer is a small computer for one person, like a desktop, laptop or even a smartphone. A minicomputer is medium sized and serves many users at once in a small company, though today most such work is done by servers. A mainframe is a large computer that handles thousands of users, like a bank's transactions. A supercomputer is the fastest type, used for weather forecasting and science research.
India builds its own supercomputers too. The Param series is built by see-dack, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, in Pune. The India Meteorological Department uses supercomputers to predict monsoons and cyclones. Their speed is measured in flops, which means floating point operations per second, or calculations with decimal numbers.
There is one more type you use every day without noticing. An embedded computer is a tiny computer built inside another machine. It does only one fixed job, again and again. A washing machine, a microwave, a car's airbag system and a smart watch all have embedded computers inside.
Let us revise what we learned today. Every computer follows input, process, output and storage. Its main characteristics are speed, accuracy, storage and diligence. We use computers at home, in school, at work and in hospitals. The types are micro, mini, mainframe and super computers, plus embedded computers inside machines. Look around your home today and count how many embedded computers you can find.
