The full lesson, in text

Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. Most Indians now shop, pay and book tickets using only a mobile phone. Is that still e-commerce, or something new? It has its own name, m-commerce. Your Class twelve Computer Studies syllabus introduces it, and today we will learn what it is and how it works.

Here is the map of this chapter. It starts with the meaning of m-commerce. Then it shows the devices and technologies that make it possible. Next it explains uses like mobile banking, ticket booking and shopping. It ends with advantages, limitations and a comparison with e-commerce.

Now the definition. The letter M stands for mobile, so m-commerce means mobile commerce. It is buying and selling goods and services using wireless handheld devices. Wireless means there is no cable, and handheld means it fits in your hand, like a mobile phone or a tablet. M-commerce is a part of e-commerce, done on the move.

You see m-commerce all around you. Scanning a UPI QR code to pay a tea stall is m-commerce. Booking a bus seat on a travel app is m-commerce too. So is recharging a phone through a wallet app. Selling your old books on a classifieds app is m-commerce in the C2C model. Even a shopkeeper ordering stock on a wholesale app is m-commerce, in the B2B model.

Why did m-commerce grow so fast in India? First, low cost smartphones reached almost every home. Second, mobile data became cheap and fast on 4G and 5G networks. Third, UPI and QR codes made paying with a phone as easy as a tap. Fourth, many apps now work in Indian languages, so even first time users feel comfortable.

Several technologies work behind m-commerce. Mobile Internet, like 4G and 5G, lets the phone go online. SMS sends short text messages, like your OTP or a bank alert. GPS, the Global Positioning System, finds your location to show a restaurant nearby. NFC, which means Near Field Communication, lets you pay by tapping a card or phone on a machine. A QR code is a square pattern that the camera scans to pay a shop.

Your textbook also mentions WAP, so let us understand it. WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol, where a protocol is a set of rules for communication. Around the year two thousand, WAP let old keypad phones open simple web pages. Those pages were small and mostly text, because screens were tiny and networks were slow. Today, smartphones open full websites and apps, so WAP is mainly history.

Let us see a real m-commerce payment as a flowchart. First, you open a UPI app and scan the shop's QR code. Next, you enter the amount, say thirty rupees for a snack. The app asks, is the UPI PIN correct? If yes, the money moves and both of you see payment done. If no, the app shows incorrect PIN, and no money moves.

Pause and predict. Aman books a movie ticket on his laptop at home, using Wi-Fi. Is it e-commerce or m-commerce? It is e-commerce, because a laptop is not treated as a handheld mobile device. If he booked the same ticket on his phone, it would be m-commerce, and still e-commerce too.

Let us revise what we learned today. M-commerce is buying and selling on wireless handheld devices. It is a part of e-commerce. It grew in India with cheap phones, cheap data and UPI. It uses mobile Internet, SMS, GPS, NFC and QR codes. And WAP was the early way phones opened the web. Look at your own phone today and count the m-commerce apps on it.
