Employability Skills III: Working independently and building self-confidence

Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. Your teacher gives a project and says, submit in two weeks. Nobody checks on you every day. Will you finish on time? Today we learn how to work independently, and how to build the self-confidence that makes it possible.

Let us start with the meaning. Working independently means doing your tasks without someone watching you all the time. You take decisions that are within your role. You manage your own time and check the quality of your work. You still ask for help, but only after you have tried yourself.

Why do employers value this skill? It saves the manager's time, because they do not need to check you every hour. It shows that you can be trusted. Work gets done even when the team or the boss is away. And trusted people get more responsibility, which leads to growth.

Four qualities help you work independently. Self-discipline means doing the task even when you do not feel like it, like studying at six every evening. Time management means planning your time, for example with a daily to do list. Responsibility means owning your results, including admitting a mistake. Problem solving means trying to find an answer yourself before asking.

Here is how to handle a task on your own. First, receive the task. Make sure you understand the goal and the deadline. Plan the steps and the time for each. If you are stuck even after trying, ask for help. Otherwise, complete the work and check it carefully. Finally, submit it on time.

Now the second part of our topic. Self-confidence means believing in your own abilities. It is not pride or showing off; a confident person can still say, I do not know. It grows with practice and small successes. It lets you try new things, and speak up in class or at work.

You can see confidence in behaviour. A confident person makes eye contact, while a person with low confidence looks down. A confident person speaks clearly, while the other mumbles. A confident person tries new tasks, while the other avoids challenges. A confident person accepts mistakes, while the other is afraid of failing.

Here are five steps to build self-confidence. Set small goals and complete them, because every success adds belief. Prepare well before a task, like practising a presentation twice. Replace negative self-talk, like I cannot, with positive self-talk, like I will try. Keep practising skills such as speaking, writing or coding. Stand straight and dress neatly, because good posture also makes you feel stronger.

Self-talk is what you say to yourself in your mind. Change I am bad at maths into I am improving at maths. Change I will fail into I have prepared, and I will do my best. Change everyone is better than me into I learn at my own pace.

Pause and predict. Aman is stuck on a project task. He has not tried anything yet, and he messages his senior. Is he working independently? Not yet. He should first read the instructions and search for a solution, and then ask with a clear question.

Let us revise what we learned today. Working independently means doing tasks without constant supervision. It needs self-discipline, time management and responsibility. Try first, and then ask for help with a clear question. Self-confidence is belief in your own abilities. Build it with small goals, good preparation and positive self-talk.
