Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. The night before a board exam, your heart beats fast and you cannot sleep. Is this stress bad? Not always. Today we learn what stress is, how to manage it, and how knowing yourself, called self-awareness, makes you stronger.
Let us begin with the meaning. Stress is the way the body and mind respond to pressure or a challenge. A little stress can be useful, because it pushes you to study for a test. Too much stress for a long time harms your health, sleep and work. The thing that causes stress is called a stressor, like an exam or a quarrel.
Stressors come from many areas of life. In studies, exams and results cause stress. In the family, high expectations or money problems can cause stress. With friends, quarrels and peer pressure cause stress. Inside yourself, low confidence and poor sleep also add stress.
How do you know stress is too high? Watch for three kinds of signs. Headaches, a fast heartbeat and tiredness are signs in the body. Worry, anger and not being able to focus are signs in the mind. Poor sleep, eating too much or too little, and avoiding people are signs in behaviour.
A useful model is the A B C of stress management. A is adversity, meaning a difficult event, like scoring low in a unit test. B is your belief about it, like I am useless, or I can improve before the finals. C is the consequence, meaning how you feel and act, which comes from your belief, not from the event. So to change the result, change the belief.
Now, five ways to manage stress. Exercise or yoga for about thirty minutes a day releases tension from the body. Meditation, with slow deep breathing, calms the mind. Time management, like a study timetable, stops the last minute rush. A healthy routine, with good sleep and food, gives you more energy. And talking to a parent, teacher or friend shares the load.
Here is a quick technique you can use in the exam hall. Breathe in slowly through the nose while counting to four. Hold the breath for four counts. Breathe out slowly for four counts. Repeat this five times, and your heartbeat will slow down.
Now the second part of our topic, self-awareness. Self-awareness means knowing your own feelings, thoughts and habits. It means knowing your strengths, the things you do well, and your weaknesses, the things you need to improve. It also means knowing your interests and your values, meaning what matters to you. You cannot manage stress or plan a career without it.
A simple way to build self-awareness is to list your strengths and weaknesses. For example, a student may be good at maths, but have poor handwriting. She may be helpful to friends, but get angry fast. She may be punctual, but fear speaking in public. Once weaknesses are written down, she can work on them one by one.
How do you become more self-aware? Keep a diary, and note how you felt each day and why. Ask teachers and friends for honest feedback about you. Notice what triggers your stress, so you can prepare for it. Every week, reflect on what went well and what did not.
Pause and predict. Two students both fail a practice test. One thinks, I am hopeless. The other thinks, now I know my weak chapters. Who will feel less stressed? The second student, because of the A B C model. The event was the same, but a different belief gave a different consequence.
Let us revise what we learned today. Stress is the response to pressure, and a little helps but too much harms. The A B C model says adversity, belief and consequence, so change the belief. Manage stress with exercise, breathing, time plans, a healthy routine and talking to someone. Self-awareness means knowing your feelings, strengths and weaknesses. Keep a diary and ask for honest feedback to grow.
