Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. Every January, many people decide, I will study hard this year. By February, most have stopped. Why? Because the goal was vague, and the motivation faded. Today we learn self-motivation and how to set SMART goals that you actually finish.
First, the meaning. Motivation is the reason that makes you act. It starts an action, and it keeps you going when the work gets hard. Self-motivation means pushing yourself to act, without waiting for someone to order you. It matters most when nobody is watching, like studying alone at home.
There are two types of motivation. Intrinsic motivation comes from inside you, like enjoying coding because it is fun. Extrinsic motivation comes from outside, like a prize, good marks or a salary. Both are useful, but intrinsic motivation usually lasts longer.
Self-motivated people share some qualities. They know what they want to achieve. They take the first step without being told. They keep going after a failure, and treat it as a lesson. They take responsibility for their results, instead of blaming others.
How do you build self-motivation? Find your reason, and ask why this goal matters to you. Break big tasks into small steps, like one chapter a day instead of the whole book. Celebrate small wins, because progress feels good and pulls you forward. Spend time with positive and focused friends.
Motivation needs a direction, and that direction is a goal. A goal is a result you plan to achieve by a set time. A short term goal takes days or months, like finishing a Python course by June. A long term goal takes years, like becoming a software developer. Short term goals are the steps that lead to a long term goal.
Board exams often ask you to expand SMART. S is specific, so say exactly what you want. M is measurable, so you can count your progress. A is achievable, meaning possible with your skills and effort. R is realistic, and some books say relevant, meaning it fits your life and bigger aims. T is time bound, so it has a deadline.
Let us turn a vague goal into a SMART one. Study more is vague, but revise maths is specific. A lot cannot be measured, but twenty sums a day can. Studying all night is not achievable, but one hour daily is. Someday has no deadline, but for thirty days does.
Here is a simple process to reach a goal. First, write the goal down in SMART form. Next, list the small steps you need. Then set a date for each step. Every week, check whether you are on track. If yes, keep going. If no, adjust the plan instead of giving up. Step by step, you reach the goal.
Pause and predict. Neha says, I will become fit. Which letter of SMART is clearly missing? Many are missing, but the biggest gap is measurable and time bound. A SMART version is, I will walk for thirty minutes, five days a week, for the next two months.
Let us revise what we learned today. Self-motivation means pushing yourself to act. Intrinsic motivation comes from inside, and extrinsic comes from outside. Short term goals are the steps to long term goals. SMART means specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound. Write your goal, set small steps, and review every week.
