Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. How do cartoon wheels spin while the car also drives forward? Moving one shape is easy. Today we will use layers, groups and effect layers in Synfig Studio to build animations with many moving parts.
Let us quickly recall two ideas. Each object is a layer, listed in the layers panel. The top layer is drawn in front of the others. In animation mode, every change is saved as a waypoint at the current time. And tweening fills in the frames between waypoints.
The first advanced idea is simple. Every layer keeps its own waypoints. So the sun can rise while the clouds drift sideways, at the same time. Each layer can start and stop moving at different times. The timetrack panel shows the waypoints of each selected layer on its own row.
The second idea is the group layer. Put the car body and both wheels into one group. Animate the group's offset, which is its position, so the whole car drives across. Then open the group and animate each wheel so it spins. The group carries the parts along, and each part keeps its own motion.
Here is the car step by step. First, draw the body and two wheels. Next, group each wheel with its own rotate layer above it. Then group everything together into one car group. Turn animation mode on, move to four seconds, and drag the car group right. Still at four seconds, set a wheel's rotate angle to seven hundred twenty degrees, which is two full turns.
Pause and predict. A rotate layer sits above the wheel layer in the list. The body layer sits above the rotate layer. Which part spins? Only the wheel spins, because a rotate layer affects only the layers below it.
This leads to an important rule. An effect layer changes every layer below it, even the background. So put the effect and its target together inside a group. Inside a group, the effect cannot touch layers outside the group. For two wheels, give each wheel its own group with its own rotate layer.
Effect layers can be animated too. For a rotate layer, animate its amount, which is the angle, to make a fan spin. For a scale layer, animate its amount, which is the zoom, so text pops up. For a blur layer, animate its size to bring a picture into focus. For any layer, animate amount from zero to one to fade it in.
Let us fade in a title, a common exam task. Select the text layer. With animation mode on, at zero seconds set its amount to zero, so it is invisible. At one second, set its amount to one, so it is fully visible. Synfig tweens the opacity, and the title slowly appears.
Two more tools add polish. The blend method decides how a layer mixes with the layers below it. For example, onto draws the layer only where something is already drawn below. A switch layer is a group that shows only one of its layers at a time. It is useful for swapping mouth shapes or body poses.
Another powerful idea is linking. Select the handles of two or more layers, for example both wheel colours. Right click and choose link. Now the linked values always stay equal. When you change one, all of them change together, which saves time and avoids mistakes.
For many layers, use the keyframes panel. A keyframe marks an important moment for the whole scene, not just one layer. When keyframe lock is on, keyframes hold the values of layers around them in place. You can drag a keyframe in time to stretch or shrink a part of the animation. This keeps many moving layers in step.
Let us revise what we learned today. Each layer has its own waypoints and timing. Group layers to move many parts together. Effect layers change only the layers below, so keep them inside groups. Animate the amount parameter to fade, spin or zoom. And keyframes keep many layers moving in step.
