What does chmod +x do?
Short answer. Allows the script to run.
What is the first line called?
The shebang.

Your first script says Permission denied. Why? The first line tells Linux to use bash. A new file cannot run yet. In the terminal, chmod plus x allows it. Dot slash runs it. Two steps. Start with the hash bang line. Then chmod plus x.
