Why won't my program compile after int total;?
Short answer. A local variable has no default value, so it must be initialised before use.
What is initialising?
Giving the variable its first value.

You declared int total, then printed it. Error! A local variable has no default. Declare it, then give it a value, before you use it. Declare with the type. Initialise with a value. Then use it.
