Why will my file program not compile?
Short answer. Opening a file can throw a checked exception, which must be handled or declared.
What are unchecked exceptions?
RuntimeException and its children, like ArithmeticException.

You opened a file, and it will not compile. Why? Two kinds. Checked ones are found at compile time. You must handle them. IOException is checked; Arithmetic is not. Remember. Checked must be handled. Unchecked are RuntimeExceptions.
