Why does my cell show the formula as text?
Short answer. You left out the equals sign at the start.
What does =SUM(B2:B4) do?
It adds every number from B2 to B4.
Start with =
| Type | Result |
|---|---|
| SUM(B2:B4) | plain text |
| =SUM(B2:B4) | total |
| =B2+C2 | adds two |
Remember
| Every formula starts with = |
You typed a sum, but the cell shows only text. Why? Formulas start with equals. Without it, you see text. With it, SUM adds the range. B2 plus C2 adds two cells. Remember. Every formula starts with an equals sign.
