Why do some books say int is 2 bytes?
Short answer. Old 16-bit compilers like Turbo C used 2 bytes.
How do you check the size?
Use sizeof.

How much memory does an int take? It depends. Char holds one character in one byte. Int is four bytes now, two on old compilers. Float is four. Double is eight. Char one, float four, double eight. Int is usually four. Sizeof tells you.
