Why did sqrt give a NameError?

Short answer. You used sqrt without math. or without from math import sqrt.

What does math.sqrt(81) give?

9.0.

Remember

import math: use math.sqrt()
from math import sqrt: sqrt()

Square root gave a name error. What did you forget? A module is a file of ready code. Import math needs math dot before names. From math import square root skips it. Import math needs math dot. From import uses the name alone.
