Informatics Practices vs Information Technology: Are They the Same?
No. Informatics Practices (065) is an academic subject built on Python, Pandas and SQL, assessed 70 theory plus 30 practical. Information Technology (802) is a skill subject built on office tools, RDBMS and Java basics, assessed 60 theory plus 40 practical, and it includes an Employability Skills part that IP does not have.
They are different subjects with different codes
The confusion is understandable: both are 'computer' subjects, both involve databases, and schools sometimes offer only one. But they sit in different CBSE streams.
- Informatics Practices, code 065, Class 11 and 12, an academic elective.
- Information Technology, code 802, Class 11 and 12, a skill subject. (Code 402 is the Class 9 and 10 version.)
The marks split is not the same
This is the clearest practical difference and it changes how you should study.

IT puts 40 marks in the lab. If your child works better by doing than by writing, that alone can be worth several grades.
What each one actually covers
IP is Python for data: Pandas dataframes, plotting, SQL querying, computer networks and societal impacts. IT (802) in Class 12 is RDBMS 15 marks, web-based applications 10, Java fundamentals 20 and work-integrated learning 5, alongside the 10-mark Employability Skills part.
Which is easier?
IT is generally the lighter of the two on abstract programming, which is why it suits students taking a computer subject alongside a heavy science or commerce load. IP demands more from you in Python and SQL together.
Be careful with the word 'easier' though. IT's 40 practical marks are only easy if you actually sit at a keyboard through the year.
Who should take which
- Aiming at BCA, BSc CS or a software career and comfortable coding: IP or CS.
- Want a scoring computer subject with a strong practical component and less abstract programming: IT.
- Not sure: look at what your school offers first, because not every school runs both.
