Which Computer Subject Suits a Commerce Student?

For most commerce students, Informatics Practices (065) is the best fit: its Pandas and SQL content is directly useful for working with business data, and it avoids the heavy algorithmic programming of Computer Science. Information Technology (802) is the lighter option with more practical marks. Computer Science suits a commerce student who genuinely enjoys coding.

Start from the workload, not the subject

A commerce student is usually carrying Accountancy, Business Studies and Economics, all of which are writing-heavy. The computer subject should complement that load, not compete with it.

Informatics Practices, the usual answer

IP is 70 theory plus 30 practical. In Class 12 the theory is Pandas 25, SQL 25, networks 10 and societal impacts 10. Two things make it a good commerce fit:

  • The content is business-shaped. Data handling and querying are exactly what commerce work involves.
  • The programming is bounded. Python used through Pandas, without data structures or recursion.

Information Technology, the lighter option

IT (802) is 60 theory plus 40 practical, and it includes a 10-mark Employability Skills part. Its 40 practical marks are the most reliable marks in the computer family, provided the student actually works at a keyboard through the year.

Choose IT if the priority is a scoring subject with minimal abstract programming.

Computer Science, for the student who codes

Nothing stops a commerce student taking CS (083), and some do very well. But 40 of the 70 theory marks are programming, including recursion and data structures. Take it because the student enjoys coding, not because it sounds more serious.

What none of them changes

Eligibility. BCA, BSc Computer Science and BCom admissions do not require a particular Class 12 computer subject, and no Indian entrance exam tests one. Choose on fit and workload.

A quick way to decide

  • Likes organising and querying information: IP.
  • Wants the lightest coding load and the most practical marks: IT.
  • Actively enjoys writing and debugging programs: CS.
  • Not sure: sit a free demo of two of them before the school deadline.

Frequently asked questions

Which computer subject is best for commerce students?+
Informatics Practices (065) usually fits best, because Pandas and SQL are directly useful for business data and the programming load is bounded. Information Technology (802) is the lighter alternative.
Can a commerce student take Computer Science?+
Yes. There is no restriction. But 40 of the 70 theory marks are programming, including recursion and data structures, so take it out of genuine interest in coding.
Does the computer subject affect BCom or BCA admission?+
No. BCA, BSc Computer Science and BCom admissions do not require a particular Class 12 computer subject.
Is Informatics Practices useful after school?+
The Pandas and SQL skills are directly applicable to business and analytics work, which is why it suits a commerce path well.
