CBSE AI 417 vs 843: Which One Is Yours?

CBSE teaches Artificial Intelligence at two levels. Code 417 runs in Classes 9 and 10 as an introductory skill subject. Code 843 runs in Classes 11 and 12 as a deeper, project-heavy elective. Both are 100 marks split evenly, 50 theory and 50 practical, and 843 does not require you to have taken 417.

Two codes, one subject family

Parents often assume there is a single CBSE AI subject. There are two, and knowing which one your child is sitting decides what to revise.

  • 417, Classes 9 and 10, introductory. Awareness plus a first taste of building.
  • 843, Classes 11 and 12, a full senior-secondary elective with a capstone project.

Both are 50 theory and 50 practical

This is the single most important fact about CBSE AI, and the one most often missed. Half the subject is earned in the lab. In Computer Science (083) and Informatics Practices (065) the practical is 30 of 100. In AI it is 50.

A student who treats AI as a reading subject is choosing to compete for only half the paper.

What Class 9 (417) covers

Part A carries Employability Skills for 10 theory marks. Part B carries 40 theory marks across the subject units: AI Reflection, Project Cycle and Ethics (10), Data Literacy (10), Math for AI (7), Introduction to Generative AI (5) and Introduction to Python (8).

Notice how small each unit is. Nothing here is deep, which is exactly why marks are lost to carelessness rather than difficulty.

What changes in Class 11 and 12 (843)

843 is where AI becomes serious. Class 11 lays the foundation and Class 12 builds to a capstone project, with practical work carrying documentation, a lab test and a viva. The theory still shares the paper with Employability Skills.

Is AI the same as Computer Science?

No, and this matters when choosing. AI (417/843) is a skill subject focused on data, machine learning concepts and AI projects. Computer Science (083) is the academic computing subject with deeper programming, data structures and databases. Many students take one of each.

How to actually score in AI

  • Start the practical file in the first term. Half the marks live there.
  • Learn enough Python to be comfortable, because the practical assumes it.
  • Write down why you made each project decision; the viva examines your reasoning, not your code.
  • Confirm your school's exact unit list against the official CBSE curriculum for this session.
